Speaker of the Parliament, Abdelkader Bensalah on Tuesday advocated the beginning of a new era in which the Algerian people take their destiny into their hands by choosing their leaders freely and democratically.
“We are in the face of a collective national duty, which expressly implies that everyone must work to guarantee the appropriate conditions for the next short period to accelerate the beginning of a new stage, a stage in which the Algerian people will be master of their destiny, through the democratic and free choice of their leaders," said Bensalah ahead of the Parliament’s meeting (Council of the Nation and the People's National Assembly) to take cognizance of vacant presidency, notified by the Constitutional Council, and to trigger Article 102 of the Constitution.
"In this particular situation, I assume a heavy constitutional duty, and with the help of Allah, we will take the road towards achieving all the ambitious goals of the Algerian people," said Bensalah.
In this regard, Bensalah underlined the importance of "rigorous implementation of the Constitution with seriousness and abnegation to enable the people to have their say as soon as possible and to decide sovereignly on the choice of their elected President to lead the country, adopt the programme they consider appropriate and define the outlines of a future that we hope will be promising" for Algeria.
Bensalah paid tribute to the Algerian people who, he said, "strongly expressed their unity and cohesion, thus demonstrating their strong attachment to their homeland (...) and calling for positive change for the building of a new, modern and democratic Algeria open to all its children.”
The Speaker Parliament thanked all the members of both Houses of Parliament, as well as all the State institutions and bodies that "fulfill their role at this sensitive juncture in the country's history, led by the Army, worthy heir to the National Liberation Army (ALN) and all the security forces that have accomplished their mission with a high sense of professionalism that deserves all consideration and recognition.”
